Afternoon Jazz with Jim Steele
I started in public radio as a undergraduate at Wake Forest University (’79) where I received a solid education in radio production and announcing in classical music. My first experience as a jazz music radio announcer was as a volunteer at my alma mater more than 20 years later.

I consider myself a jazz music fan and by no means an expert. Every program I host is a learning experience. My favorite period in the history of jazz music starts around the year of my birth (1957) and spans a 20-year period. I love the music from earlier times up to today, but there is just something about the musicians, the singers, the songwriters and composers of the mid-20th century that enchants me.
Winston-Salem, Forsyth County and the Piedmont is lucky to be home of a large number of musicians and music educators, due in no small part to our strong system of private and public colleges and universities. Any night of the week, you can find live jazz music performances. The jazz music community is very generous in supporting non-profit organizations such as WSNC 90.5 FM and the love and respect is mutual.
Throughout my career in retail management, commercial radio, public relations and marketing in higher education and health care, I have always felt most at home in public radio. It is a pleasure, a true joy to spend an afternoon with the community listening to great jazz music.
I am fortunate to serve on the boards of non-profit organizations including Sawtooth School for Visual Art, The Camel City Jazz orchestra and Bookmarks. In 2016 I married my best friend, Gregory Duane Felts. We live in Winston-Salem with our four dogs, three cats, 10 chickens and are awaiting the arrival of a hive of bees. We collect art, drink lots of wine and enjoy taking advantage of our rich community of visual art, dance and music. We attend St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
