Save Jazz

90.5 WSNC-FM is a 10,000-watt Public Radio station owned by Winston-Salem State University and broadcasts from its beautiful campus. Our SAVE JAZZ campaign is an 365-day effort on our behalf to appeal to Jazz lovers here in the Triad and beyond to really support our efforts to maintain our programming focus on keeping the legendary artform of JAZZ alive on terrestrial radio. Hopefully you’ve listened lately through one of 3 platforms and you agree, 90.5 WSNC-FM has one of the BEST presentations of JAZZ, a unique blend of all categories, in this Country. What you’ve heard and witnessed over the last several years since 2018 serves as the foundation, there is definitely more to add to the mix.

As a Public Radio station, WSNC-FM has a four-fold mission to provide its strategic direction.  Provide local secondary education students and community volunteers with hands-on training in Radio Broadcast Media.  Provide the Triad community with a high standard brand of music entertainment focusing predominately on presenting and preserving the artform of Jazz and its legacy.  Through its Public Affairs programming, WSNC-FM thrives to offer the Forsyth County and Triad community a vast amount of information that centers around enhancing the awareness of Non-Profit Organization and Corporate Community Initiatives.  In addition, we also focus our content on one of the Strategic Goals of WSSU, information and education through community outreach on Social Justice.  And last, but certainly not least, provide WSSU with an additional vehicle for its own community outreach.

90.5 WSNC-FM began its broadcast operations 40 years ago this May and has operated with funding provided by several sources.  We receive contributions from listeners and lovers of Jazz like yourself via tax-deductible contributions from ‘Donors.’  This year as part of our 40th celebration, we will enhance the ‘Donor’ experience with more interaction……details to come.  Our normal ask…….of course one-time donations…….and as part of a bigger picture we request a minimum monthly commitment of $10.00……or $120.00 for the year.  That’s all.  Consider this, we’ve grown from 10,000 listeners a week in 2017 to approximately 50,000+ listeners per week……a 400% growth in listenership.  If just 5,000 listeners made our asking commitment, that would provide us with $600,000……a little bit more than our current costs to operate our radio station annually.  All of our funding and expenditures are public record, we’re audited annually and make those records available to the public, a requirement for Public Radio.

Until recently, over the last several years we’ve been fortunate to receive grant funding from the Corporation For Public Broadcasting.  That funding allowed us in 2018 with the change in management to focus on attracting more of an audience and upgrade our equipment and systems to offer radio industry standard broadcast equipment and operating systems to benefit our distribution and operational needs as well as those of the business and listener community.  In transparency, that grant no longer exists because we haven’t met their revenue criteria.  Five years into a rebuild, we finally feel we have a product in 90.5 WSNC-FM that will be of unique benefit to Forsyth County and the Triad businesses and its citizens to warrant contributions and additional funding.  That is the main focus today, replacing and attracting additional funding to allow 90.5 WSNC-FM maintain pursuit of its missions.

We also receive contributions via Underwriting Sponsorships (On-Air & Digital) available to businesses and non-profits as well as salary support through the University’s Title III program.  In-Kind Contributions are also available.
